The Hair and Nails Examiner had exclusive backstage access Sunday and Monday in Las Vegas at the Silverton Hotel’s Veil Theater for Battle of the Strands 2014. Dubbed the “World Cup of Beauty,” hairstylists, nail technicians, stylists and makeup artists from around the globe competed in the total beauty and fashion competition, which has many phases and elimination rounds. The finals crowned a student winner and a professional: one, which is revealed in the slideshow, and the other that will be announced when the four episodes of “Global Beauty Masters” air in December on Discovery Fit and Health.

Battle of the Strands “featured top beauty teams from around the globe,” using the most popular professional brands such as Farouk Systems Inc., CHI, Millennium Systems International, Ultratress, Kryolan Professional Make-up and Bhumi Makeup Brushes. Eighteen teams from nine different countries competed in hair, makeup, nails and wardrobe on the student level Sunday night and the professional level on Monday evening. BOTS was broadcasted live to over 600 movie theaters nationwide for beauty professionals to be inspired, courtesy of Fathom Events.

The week leading up to the event was wracked with team challenges from the judges, who are experts in all areas of beauty. Educational courses were offered and taught by internationally renowned professionals as the world of beauty gathered in Las Vegas. And prior to the professional competition, press and media were treated to a pamper party.

The Inaugural Press Pamper Suite was courtesy of Men’s Grooming Expert and Director of Special Events for Battle of the Strands, Lyle Malapit. Attendees received VIP beauty services from past Battle of the Strands Winners, gift bags from CHI, Hot Tools and more, as well as manicures and massages from local Las Vega beauty professionals such as Heidi Wiest, Andrew Scmitz, and Shannon Rooney of Seriously Nails.

The professional salon teams from the United States included Kontempo from Omaha, Rose Knows Beauty of Birmingham, Hair Magic Salon out of Colchester, CT Team JAB from Arizona, Hair Love Magic of Aurora, CO, Trinity of Beauty in Kileen, TX, DNS Gold from Lehigh Acres, FL, Juan Daniel Salon out of Chicago, IL and Red Door Spa from Phoenix. The International Teams included Team Canada Giancarlo Intini, the Wanda Montes Salon from Puerto Rico, Pty-2014 from Panama, Team South Africa, Mala from Argentina, Team SHE Hair Care of Mexico, Team Jamaica, and from Japan, Team Neolive.

The two-day student and then professional finale was truly a spectacle to behold, with inspirational and hair-raising looks. Each level had a theme to complete for their overall production. The student winners, Team Shining Hair, are pictured in the slideshow, but the winner of the professional competition will be revealed when the beauty competition airs on Discovery Health and Fit TV.

According to Lisa Marie Garcia, BOTS judge for the student competition and Vice President of Shows and Education for Farouk Systems Inc., the students are scored upon on hair, nails, wardrobe, team spirit, and the presentation of the entire concept, (in the students’ case it was Avant-Anime). Within those categories the judges look for workmanship, creativity, and the overall execution.

Hosted by hair artists Woody and Amy Michleb, the four episodes of “Global Beauty Masters,” which will showcase the weeklong event, also features Krista White, season 14 winner of “America’s Next Top Model” as one of the celebrity judges of the professional beauty competition. Performances include MO5AIC, Bella Strings and soon-to-be famous Las Vegas pop star Manika who contributed to the “Global Beauty Masters” soundtrack.

Watch why “beauty will never be the same” beginning December 2 on Discovery Fit and Health at 5 p.m. EST. Check local listings to see the Battle of the Strands winners, and all of the behind-the-scenes drama that only those with a flair for the dramatic can muster.
